iPod Touch: How come when I plug in the mic or headphones (w/ built-in mic), it says there is no mic?

I was trying to record my voice on the voice recorder. First, I plugged in my headphones (which have built-in mics), it said “You have to plug in a mic,” or “There is no mic connected,” So, I tried a computer mic, it still didn’t work. Then, I bought a NEW mic, the same thing happened. How can I record my voice and have the mic work?
@Sam – No, the white headphones don’t work either.
