In terms of guitar tone, who are your favorite guitar players?
Think more about tone than playing ability, not that they’re mutually exclusive, of course, but I’m just trying to see what your favorite tones are.
One of my favorites is George Harrison. He seemed like someone who was very interested in trying many different guitars and getting as many sounds out of them as possible. He never stuck with anything for too long, was always playing around with different combinations, and got some awesome tones that are really hard to replicate. My favorite tone of his has to be “Day Tripper”. A lot of people come close, yet I’ve never heard anyone quite match the recording.
Eric Clapton is another favorite. The “woman tone” he achieved with the Gibsons is legendary. The album he did with John Mayall & the Bluesbreakers is one of my favorites. Another one that’s overlooked is the Blind Faith album. He used a Telecaster and played it through a Leslie. The odd thing is that after he got the Stratocaster it seems like he just decided he was going to go with that and didn’t try a lot of other tone experiments, which is kind of a shame.
jimi hendrix was the one who really got me into Strats. I was reluctant to get a Strat because it seemed like everyone else had one and I wanted to be “unique”. Hearing “Axis: Bold As Love” with those gorgeous clean tones, I HAD to get myself a Stratocaster.
Honorable mentions: Jimmy Page and John Frusciante.
